Born in 1911 (died in 2004). A self-taught artist, Pottinger painted the cityscape of Kingston for his entire career, documenting the colour, vitality and dignity of everyday folk going about their hardworking existence.

He started his career as a painter in the 1940's, when he took part in the art classes Edna Manley organized at the Junior Centre of the Insitute of Jamaica. He recalled that it was Ralph Campbell, another participant in the classes, who was responsible for his inclusion. Ralph Campbell had heard about Pottinger and his talent for painting and decided to invite him to join the classes. Pottinger accepted Campbell's invitation and began attending art classes which provided the ideal environment for them to learn the basic elements of painting and drawing.

He insisted that when he went to these art classes he already knew how to use colours but the Junior Centre classes introduced him to the knowledge of drawing, which provided him with a solid foundation for his paintings. Pottinger's oeuvre is vast and he is one of Jamaica's most prolific painters.
